Returning to Work After Maternity Leave or Extended Leave: Be Kind to Yourself
Ever feel like you are spinning so many plates that one is bound to fall?
I remember that feeling well, particularly when my second daughter was born. I was trying to hold it all together, being a mum to two girls while still wanting a career, but not knowing how I could successfully manage both. It felt as though everyone needed something from me and, despite trying my best, I felt like I was failing at everything.
Don’t forget the sleepless nights, the exhaustion that comes with a baby not sleeping certainly didn't help!
Returning to work after maternity leave, sick leave or any extended period away can feel daunting. Often, the organisation you left has changed. The role you knew may have evolved. But more significantly, you may have changed.
The things that mattered to you before may no longer hold the same importance. Your priorities may have shifted, and suddenly you find yourself questioning what you want for yourself, your family and your career. Then there is the mammy guilt that so many new mums experience when trying to balance it all.
If you are preparing to return to work, or have recently returned, here are some tips that may help you settle back into your new routine.
Tips for Settling Back Into Work
1. Be kind to yourself
Allow yourself time to settle into a brand new routine. Returning to work is a significant life transition and it takes time to adjust.
2. Build a strong support network
Find people who understand what you are experiencing. This might be trusted colleagues, friends, return-to-work support groups, or other parents navigating similar challenges. Having someone to talk to on a difficult day can make all the difference.
3. Revisit your values
One of the most powerful exercises you can do when your circumstances change is to review your personal values.
Your values are your moral compass. They help guide decisions both personally and professionally. When your choices are aligned with your values, navigating change often becomes much easier and clearer.
4. Understand the supports available to you
Take time to explore any leave, flexible working arrangements or supports available within your organisation. These can make the transition back to work significantly easier. There is nothing stronger that a support group of women supporting women to help you feel like you are not alone.
5. Talk to your manager
Don't be afraid to have an open conversation with your line manager about the support you may need. Most organisations want employees to succeed and support often starts with a conversation.
6. Make time for yourself
Your wellbeing matters too.
Whether it's a walk, a coffee with a friend, reading a book or simply enjoying some quiet time, make space for activities that help you recharge. The pile of ironing will still be there tomorrow!
7. Accept help
Particularly if you are a first-time mum, returning to work can feel overwhelming. When family, friends or colleagues offer support, accept it. You do not have to do everything on your own.
How Coaching Can Help
As a Women In Leadership Coach, I support women returning to the workplace after maternity leave, sick leave and other extended periods away from work.
One of the most common challenges I see is a loss of confidence. When priorities have changed, teams have evolved or organisations look different from the ones you left, it is natural to question yourself and your place within it.
Having been on this journey myself, I understand the challenge of wanting a fulfilling career while balancing the demands of family life.
Through coaching, I help women reconnect with their strengths, rebuild confidence, identify what matters most to them now, and create a clear path forward. Together, we explore new priorities, career aspirations and practical strategies that support success both professionally and personally.
Returning to work is not just about getting back to where you were before. It is about creating a future that reflects who you are today.
If you are finding the transition back to work challenging and would like some support navigating the organisation you once knew, I would love to have a conversation with you.
