Understanding Your Values: Your Moral Compass for Life and Career Decisions

When I was creating my business and searching for a name that truly reflected my approach, Valora quickly became the obvious choice. The word blends two themes that have shaped my personal and professional life:

  • Values — the internal compass guiding every decision

  • Valor — the courage to face challenges and lead with authenticity

Together, they reflect the heart of my work: helping people understand what matters most so they can make confident, aligned choices.

What Are Values? (And Why They Matter)

Values are your core principles — the beliefs that define what is important to you.
They influence:

  • how you think,

  • how you behave,

  • the work environments where you thrive, and

  • the direction you choose in your life and career.

When you are clear on your values, you gain clarity, confidence, and a sense of purpose.
When you are not clear on them, life can feel confusing, reactive, or misaligned.

Signs You’re Not Honouring Your Values

When your values are not reflected in your environment, relationships, or work, you may notice:

1. Internal conflict

A feeling that something is “off,” even if you can’t name it.

2. Reduced motivation and engagement

Tasks that once energised you now feel draining.

3. Stress and burnout

Misalignment leads to emotional fatigue and a sense of disconnection.

4. Difficulty making decisions

It becomes harder to choose the “right” path when you’re disconnected from what matters.

5. Loss of authenticity

You may find yourself adapting, pleasing others, or stepping outside your true self.

These symptoms are often early indicators that your values need attention.

How to Identify Your Core Values

Understanding your values is one of the most powerful steps you can take in personal and professional development.

Here’s a simple exercise to get started:

1. Identify your values

Write down the values that matter most to you.

2. Rank them in order of importance

Your top 5 often represent your non‑negotiables.

3. Score yourself out of 10

Ask yourself:
“How fully am I honouring this value at the moment?”
Score each value from 0–10. (0 = I am not honouring my values, 10 = I am honouring my values)

4. Reflect and take action

Where the score is low, ask:

  • What needs to change?

  • What support or boundaries do I need?

  • What would one step closer to a 10 look like?

This exercise creates immediate clarity around decisions and helps you realign your life and career with what matters most.

Why Understanding Your Values Transforms Your Life and Career

When your actions align with your values, you experience:

  • greater clarity

  • more meaningful decision‑making

  • increased confidence

  • improved wellbeing

  • a stronger sense of direction

  • authenticity in relationships and leadership

Values alignment isn’t just reflective work, it is a foundation for long‑lasting change.

How I Help Clients Work With Their Values

In my coaching and mentoring work, values are often the starting point.
Together, we explore:

  • what their values truly mean

  • how those values show up in their daily life

  • where misalignment is creating tension

  • how to build habits and decisions around what matters most

This process often leads to transformational shifts,  in confidence, career direction, self‑leadership, and overall wellbeing.
